Leaves...

The leaf had had a wondrous journey through life. Its short but wonderful life.

It had started out as a small bud bursting forth from the branch. It slowly unfurled itself to the sun, to the sky, to the stars.

Rain, wind, bugs. All the amazing things that the Creator had bestowed upon the world of the leaf. He drank it all in and sang praises.

He watched the world around him. The comings and goings of the many creations. The small and the large. The living and mechanical. The life of his world. The life of his tree.

The spring was early and the summer long. It stretched out through October the sun breathing its warm breath. The wind kissing him with its warmth.

Where was the autumn cool? The frosty breath he heard spoken of in whispers and shadows. There was nothing but warmth. Nothing but green. Nothing but life.

Then it came. One night a sharp slap of wind. Cold. Very cold. The sun no longer kissed his warmth upon his brow. He faded into a pale yellow. No longer green and growing. No longer tender and pliant. Now a faded yellow holding on, clinging to the branch. Vowing to never surrender to the world. He would be the first to make it. He would live. He would not die.

Rain came and he was tired. He held tightly while his brothers let loose. He held while the wind blew. Yet during the fight, during the struggle to hang on he heard a small whisper on the wind. "Let go. It is time to stop your fight."

No. He would not do it but he slipped. He lost his grip and he gasped waiting for the awful plunge. It didn't hurt. It was the whisper who took him. He fluttered gently and gracefully. He danced upon the whisper and sang a song of joy.

He gently landed on sidewalk with his brothers. Cushioned by their bodies. Resting. He smiled. It wasn't hard after all to let go. He thought about his life and the many sights and sounds. He thought about her.

He had so often watched her and wondered how things were for her. He understood she was different. She couldn't run and dance like the others. She could move in her chair though. She danced in circles on the sidewalk. He loved to watch her dance. She laughed and her eyes would shine in glee. He was going to miss her. He was going to miss seeing her. He wished he could see her one more time.

It was many hours. Countless hours since he had left his home. He had laid here slowly fading. He gasped for life. He was dry and about to fade away forever. So many of those around him had gone. They were brown and hard. He was brown. He was crunchy but somehow he was still there. Why?

A gust of wind came and he was blown into the air momentarily. He looked out and saw her. She was laughing. She was riding and dancing. She was dancing in the leaves. She was twirling and the leaves were swirling and crunching around her. She was so happy. She laughed and said she loved the leaves. She loved to hear them crunch and they gave her the greatest joy.

He smiled as he fluttered away and gave her joy.
